Creating A Great Garden

Gardening Can Be Easy With These Tips

By Karen

Whether they’ve read about them in articles or seen them on grocery store shelves, most people are somewhat familiar with organic products. Distinguishing which foods are organic is really quite simple. They have special packaging and cost a fortune. You can cut the store out of the equation and save a lot of money by planting your own patch of organic vegetables in the back yard!

Plant slug-proof perennials. Your plants can be destroyed by slugs and snails overnight. These pests prefer plants with thin smooth leaves. Plant some helleborus or euphorbias along with your other perennials. Some perennials, however, leave a bad taste in slugs’ mouths or are difficult to chew through because their leaves aren’t tender. Examples of these include euphorbia, hellebourus and achillea. Others you may want to consider are campanula and heuchera.

Plant vines like ivy to cover fences and dividing walls. Climbing plants can cover a wall after one growing season only. You can also train climbers to cover arbors and other things that you want covered, and they will even grow right through trees and shrubs. Some must be tied onto a support, but a number of climbers attach to surfaces with twining stems or tendrils. Some of the most reliable varieties are wisteria, clematis, jasmine, honeysuckle and climbing roses.

Plants need to take in CO2 to grow and thrive. With a high level of CO2 plants will grow much better. Greenhouses provide the best levels of CO2 for plants. To maximize your plants’ growth, make sure to monitor these levels to ensure they’re adequate.

When you decide to add vegetables into your garden space, be aware that they must be placed where they will receive direct sunlight for a minimum of six hours daily. Pretty much any vegetable you plant in your garden requires sunshine for this duration. It allows them to grow in the proper manner and also much faster. This is the same for many varieties of flowers.

Always have a plan for the garden prior to the start of planting it. Doing so means you can remember where each particular plant is when you start seeing sprouts arise from the earth. You can also prevent yourself from losing small plants within a large garden.

If your garden requires a lot of low work, then save yourself some strain by investing in knee pads. Excessive time spent kneeling often results in significant stiffness and pain. Having a pair of excellent knee pads for gardening can help cushion the knees to provide additional comfort.

When you’re dealing with a veggie garden, pest control may be difficult. Avoid spraying harsh chemicals on fruits and vegetables destined for your table. To safely keep your garden pest-free, keep a sharp eye out. If you find any unwanted pests, try removing them by hand.

Don’t use pesticides that aren’t meant to kill specific types of garden pests. While broad-spectrum pesticides will kill most pests, they will also kill helpful insects. The bugs you need are often more fragile than the ones you don’t: a pesticide could actually kill the beneficial insects while leaving the pests unaffected. This will cause a cycle to start where you will need to keep increasing the amount of pesticide you are using.

If you’re growing plants indoors, keep your thermostat around 65 or 75 degrees daily. The plants need this temperature in order to effectively grow. Heat lamps can be used to promote growth without the necessity of raising your home’s interior temperature.

Growing your garden at home might not be the most convenient thing for you, but you will save a lot of money and always have the confidence that what you’re eating and feeding your family is as fresh and as healthy as possible. Use the tips you’ve learned here and get started on your garden today.
